The earliest known publication of this British drinking song dates from circa 1750 in "Charming Phyllis's Garland". In this song, a group of maidens from the Isle of Wight go on a drunk and to pay their tab give up their clothes and, in some versions, their maidenheads. It is collected in the Roud Folk Song index as number 252, and is also known as "Drunken Maidens", "The Four Drunken Maidens", and "The Three English Fair Maids".
