Comments
While Root's "The Battle Cry of Freedom" was originally written as a Unionist rallying song, it was reappropriated by the Southerners, Schreiner and Barnes, who adapted Root's song into a Confederate war hymn and is often referred to as the Confederate Version or the Southern Version of The Battle Cry of the Freedom.

The Confederate adaptation opens "Our flag is proudly floating on the land and on the main" (and says "Dixie forever" in the Chorus).

The original Union version by Root opens "Yes, we'll rally round the flag, boys, We'll rally once again" (and says "The Union forever" in the Chorus)
