No. 2611 in the Roud Index of folk songs. A song from the Eighteenth Century about a girl called Dolly Coxon from Sandgate, Newcastle upon Tyne, her association with a soldier from the “The Black Cuffs” (North Yorkshire Militia) and her friends hanging around the Quayside waiting for the next regiment to come in: “The Green Cuffs” (Ulster Dragoons). Whether she is of a dubious profession or merely happens to fall for a soldier is never quite made clear. The publication date above refers to "Rhymes of Northern Bards" by John Bell (M. Angus, Newcastle upon Tyne).
