Und was bekam des Soldaten Weib [poem] written by Bertolt Brecht – Long quote
Comments
Translating to "What Did the Soldier's Wife Get?", Weill composed this as a 'ballad for voice and piano' to Brecht's lyrics in 1942 while both were in US exile. The first recording by Lotte Lenya was broadcast on shortwave radio into Nazi Germany.
There are musical rearrangements and the lyrics were later set to music by other composers, too, f. ex. Hanns Eisler (see Und was bekam des Soldaten Weib [Eisler]). Most interpretations use the original title, but, for propaganda reasons, some GDR versions are called "Lied vom Weib des Nazi-Soldaten" (Song of the Nazi Soldier's Wife).
