- After Kurt Weill offered to set the lyrics to music, Brecht, at the time of writing living in US exile, translated them to English. It was then first performed by Lotte Lenya at a concert in New York promoting war bonds. Most versions appear without the misspelled 'e' in 'ballade' or as "The Wife of the Soldier".
