One of the foremost and best known German socialist songs. Written in 1934 and first performed by a choir of 3,000 singers at the "Music Olympics" in Strasbourg in 1935, it expresses Brecht's strong belief that only Social Democrats, Communists and unions, basically a united working class movement, could stand a chance against the rapidly increasing Nazi acceptance and dominance. To make the song more accessible, Brecht held the lyrics quite simple and Eisler set the music to a marching beat.
