Several sources indicate this song predates the U.S. Civil war. It was very popular in the late 19th century and the early part of the 20th century in "Negro Camp Meetings." These religious services were outdoor revivals often held in forests and woodlands. The camp meeting hymn is considered by some experts to be a precedent of the Negro spiritual. A newspaper article from 1892 posted lyrics with the following description.
For years it has been customary just about these camp meeting days that one refrain sung at colored bush meetings becomes popular and is chanted everywhere, There is one air which is heard nowadays and it is known as "Pharoah's Army Got Drownd-ed." - Published by
