The Knickerbocker Line written by [Traditional]

In this song, the Bigler is a ship transporting lumber from Milwaukee to Buffalo across the Great Lakes. There is no proof but it might well have been the John Bigler, which was built in Detroit in 1866 and wrecked near Marquette, Michigan in 1884. A number of minor incidents during the voyage are described and the lack of speed of the vessel remarked upon sarcastically. While its theme is an extension of Cutting Down the Pines, several similarities link its development to The Knickerbocker Line, none the least of which is the Watch Her/Pipe Her/Twig Her phrasing in the chorus.
The publication date shown above refers to The Flying Cloud, a songster printed by singer/lumberjack/saloon-keeper Michael Cassius Dean in Virginia, Minnesota.
This song is number 645 in the Roud Folksong Index. - Licensing
