The subject of this song is based on a horse race in 1878 involving Ten Broeck from Kentucky and Mollie McCarty from California. It dates from the late 19th century. The earliest known recording was made in 1929.

Bill Monroe wrote a different set of lyrics for this song that he called "Molly and Tenbrooks" (instead of Tim Brook) and adapted into a bluegrass standard. The vast majority of artist performances will use some variation of Monroe's lyrics, even the folk versions by Ian & Sylvia and Steve Gillette.
