This song is apparently a satirical take-off of the popular American narrative poem, "Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight" by Rose Hartwick Thorpe (merely Hartwick at the time the poem was written). The first draft of poem was written when in 1867 when Thorpe was 16 years of age; it was modified and published by "The Detroit Advertiser" in 1870. Thereafter it became extremely popular and was republished throughout the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom. It became the basis of dozens of vaudeville skits. Although Thorpe continued to write and published three volumes of poetry and several children's books, none ever achieved the attention of "Curfew Must Not Ring Tonight" -- her first published work.
"Hang on the Bell Nellie" is not an adaptation of the poem as it does not use Thorpe's words, but the basic situation described in the song is the same as that in the poem. - Published by
