The verses to this work are derived from a poem included in "Say and Seal," an 1860 novel written by Anne Bartlett Warner's sister, Susan Bogert Warner. In 1862 Bradbury wrote the music and added the familiar chorus. It remains one of the most popular Christian hymns, especially among children. Like a folksong, this work has acquired many lyrical variations.
