The publication date above refers to "Traditional Tunes - A Collection of Ballad Airs" by Frank Kidson, in which he notes "Johnny Todd is a child's rhyme and game, heard and seen played by Liverpool children." Another version of what appears to be the same song is mentioned in the first of the Para Handy stories, written in Scotland in 1905, which claims that the tune was popular around 30 years earlier.

The tune was used as the theme for the 1960s television show "Z-Cars", a police drama set in Liverpool. That theme tune is used by Everton Football Club when the teams run out onto the Goodison Park pitch. - Licensing
