It tells the fictionalized story of a brave engineer who takes his train out on a stormy night after kissing his sweetheart goodbye, promising to marry her the next day, but he is killed in a head-on collision with another train. Unlike many songs in the "train wreck" subgenre, it is not based on a real incident.

Song starts "On a cold winter night...."

Robison wrote a very similar song The Wreck of the 1256 that Vernon Dalhart also first recorded.
There is another very similar themed train song called The Wreck of the C&O / Engine 143
