Less commonly known folksong that probably originated in the 18th century. In the song, a man is walking and meets a girl who is looking for her spotted cow. The man says he has seen her cow and that he will take her to the cow. The strong implication is that they end up having sex during the search. Thereafter, when the girl sees this man, she yells at him, "I've lost my spotted cow".
The song is collected in the Roud Folk Song Index as number 956. Thomas Hardy in his 1891 novel "Tess of the d'Urbervilles", has Tess' mother sing this song in Chapter 3. - Licensing
