"The Boston Burglar" - possibly an Irish-American version of the British song "Botany Bay" was copyrighted in 1881 by H. J. Wehman (New York) and published by him as both a broadside (no. 480) and in "The Vocalists's Favorite Songster" of 1885.

Irish singer Delia Murphy's 1940 recording was widely played on the radio in the U.K. and influenced many of the subsequent cover performances. As such, she is often mistakenly credited as the author of "Boston Burglar".

There's an American variant called the Louisville Burglar that tells the same tale but changes the locale. Roscoe Holcomb changed the locale again to Covington (Ky.) in a 1964 recording he called "Born and Raised in Covington".
