Legend has it, it was written for Gaby Montbreuse, a chanteuse who had a romantic relationship with Daniderff. The song was used by Charlie Chaplin in his 1936 silent comedy film "Modern Times". It was the first film where Chaplin's voice is heard as he performs Léo Daniderff's comical song. Chaplin's version is also known as The Nonsense Song, as his character sings it in gibberish.
