Nordic ballad that telles a tragic love story between Bendik and Årolilja. Bendik is sentenced to death and behaded, and Årolilja dies from sorrow. They are buried on each side of the church, but two trees grow up from the graves and get entwined above the church roof. This is a typical ballad of chivalry. The oldest Norwegian version is known from Finnmark in 1698.
The song seems to be based on the Danish legend about Hagbard og Signe. The end motif with the two tres is known in many types of poems.
