Work was written during a trip to Santo Domingo. The artist overheard a woman crying in another room of the hotel he was staying at. When he inquired about this, he was informed that she was in despair because her husband had left her. These events inspired the creation of this work. The work is commonly cited as the first example of the musical genre "Bolero-son".
