Adapted from
Habanera (L'amour est un oiseau rebelle) written by Georges Bizet
Comments
The ironic title translating to "The Jews Are Guilty of Everything", Hollaender in his simple lyrics takes that generalized antisemitic statement to a more than parodistic level and leads it ad absurdum - this also considering Bizet's original title "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle" (Love is a Rebellious Bird) and the gypsy-related "Carmen" background.
The song premiered in September, 1931, as a part of the political/satirical revue "Spuk in der Villa Stern" at Hollaender's legendary Berlin cabaret theatre Tingel-Tangel, performed by Annemarie Hase.
