Alternate titles: 'Timber' When White and Gary wrote this song, they had in mind the convicts in country road gangs which they frequently saw in their travels. Wondering how men could take the kind of treatment at which any mule would have balked, this song was a natural expression of their feeling. It's the story of a mule who had the sense to say "Enough!". Chronicles the amusing tale of a determined man and his ill-tempered mule named Jerry and their repeated attempts to haul lumber for an unsympathetic boss. Like much of depression-era poetry and songwriting, the lyrics take a satirical approach to depicting the everyday struggle everyday people endured to survive.
