African-American gospel spiritual that begins "Paul and Silas bound in jail all night long..."
The 1936 Josh White rendition appears to be the basis for the more modern versions of the song. The Stanley Brothers registered their 1960 version and this song is often mistatkenly attributed to them. The verses often have floating lyrics, though most of the bluegrass versions do tend to mirror The Country Gentlemen and Stanley Brothers recordings.
NOTE: There were two recordings of "Paul and Silas in Jail" by Rev. J.M. Gates in November 1926 and by Washington Phillips in December 1927, but neither of those two belong to this traditional song. - Licensing
