The origin of this fiddle tune is murky. The first known recording was made by Howdy Forrester in 1959. Forrester credited this tune to Fiddlin' Arthur Smith but no recording of it by Smith has been found. Some musicologists suggest that Smith created it by improvising on Bonaparte's Retreat; others suggest that it is traditional. More recently, lyrics have been set to this tune and several vocal versions have been released.
