- [Roud 29; Child 18; Ballad Index C018; Bodleian Roud 29; Wiltshire 734; Mudcat 50640; trad.] "Sir Lionel" initially was a ballad of a knight's courtship that evolved into his contesting with a dangerous wild boar in order to win the hand of a lady. Some of the alternative titles include "Bold Sir Rylas" and "The Jovial Hunter". In the Bold Sir Rylas variant the knight ends up killing the lady too after she makes further demands of him. In America it evolved into songs named "Bangum and the Boar", "Old Bangum" and "Wild Hog in the Woods".
