Song first collected by John and Alan Lomax in Texas in 1934 in a field recording of Foy and Maggie Grant. It has many floating verses but shares a lot in common with the traditional song Pretty Saro about coming to a new country and unrequited love. "When I Came Unto This Country" however takes the storyline further about stealing a horse to go see his "Nancy" and being hunted down by the law and thrown in jail and beaten.
