- Poem about the life of solitude a cowboy leads while riding on the open prairies. It was first published in The Dodge City Globe (Dodge City, Kansas) newspaper on April 7, 1885, and again two days later in The Daily Advertiser (Trinidad, Colorado) newspaper. Both were credited to Allen McCandless, who was a range hand for the Crooked L. Ranch in the Texas Panhandle.
