Song and dance from the 1820s of disputed origins. Some attributie it to a black entertainer named John 'Picayune' Butler, who was perhaps originally from Martinique, but who made his home in New Orleans. Other say it was from white minstrel performer Thomas Dartmouth (T. D.) "Daddy" Rice. The song is speculated to have been taken from Jim Crow (sometimes called Jim Cuff), a physically disabled African slave. The song became a great 19th-century hit and Rice performed all over the country as "Daddy Pops Jim Crow". It is now mostly recorded as an old-time, breakdown fiddle tune without lyrics after fiddler Melvin Wine revived it in the 1960s.
