Varying sets of lyrics were added to the bugle call "Taps". The ones that took started with the verses below. They are often incorrectly attributed to Civil War Union soldier, Horace Lorenzo Trim (1849-1915), however, the lyrics he wrote aren't the ones that became the standard. The "popular" lyrics were purportedly written by Rukard Hurd, but they have also have been attributed to Forrest W. Gaz.
