This romantically frivoulous song about a girl asking her lover to secretely visit her at night is the probably best known traditional folk song in Nether German, an idiom of northern German coastal areas and flatlands (hence aka. Plattdütsch) close to Frisian. First published in a song collection by Karl Müllenhoff in 1845 and numerous times since, most local choirs have it in their repertoire.
As often the case with traditionals, there are local title alterations and lyrical variations.
The first known recording was by Isa Vermehren, but Hannes Wader in the 1970s brought the song to broader attention by performing it on tours and including it on his Gold awarded LP "Plattdeutsche Lieder". - Licensing
