On 7th Oktober, 1949, Wilhelm Pieck for his inauguration as the first president of the GDR received a handwritten poem from Brecht. As Pieck used to start speaches with "Meine Landleute" (my fellow citizens), the poem had that title.
Pieck, uniquely in the GDR nomenclatura, was known for his interest in arts and seeking a dialogue with artists - and the only high range politician with whom Brecht was on first name basis. - Licensing
