Medieval folk ballad likely from the Södermanland area and dating back to the 17th century. A. o. also known as "Skogsjungfruns frieri" (The forest virgin's courting ) and "Bergatrollets frieri" (The female mountain troll's courting). A seaside version is called "Herr Magnus och hafsfrun" (Sir Magnus and the mermaid). The original title, also spelled "Herr Mannerlik" etc., means 'Sir Male'.
Garnarna revived the 1877 version, which subsequently was recorded/released by various similar bands from all over Europe and performed by many more. - Licensing
