Bob Dylan learned the song through Paul Clayton's adaptation Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons (When I'm Gone). He lifted the melody, as well as some lyrics:
- "T'ain't no use to sit and wonder why, darlin"
- "So I'm walkin' down that long, lonesome road"
It's debatable whether Bob Dylan's song is an adaptation of the original root work Who's Gonna Buy Your Chickens or Paul Clayton's adaptation Who's Gonna Buy You Ribbons (When I'm Gone).
