Based on a song called "God Blessed America" which he wrote on February 23th, 1940. For the first recording in 1940 the lyrics were changed and the song was renamed "This Land Is Your Land". For his 1947 recording Woody changed the lyrics again. The melody is almost the same as 'When the World's on Fire' (1930) by The Carter Family, in itself based on Blind Willie Davis's 'Rocks of Ages' (1928).
Lyrics start out -
This land is your land, this land is my land
From the California to the New York island
From the Redwood Forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me
As I went walking that ribbon of highway
I saw above me that endless skyway
And saw below me that golden valley
This land was made for you and me
The song can be regionalized. Canadians perform a version where lines two and three are revised to:
From Bonavista to Vancouver Island,
From the Artic Circle, to the Great Lake waters, - Published by
