- Traditional English folk song. The earliest known fragments can be found in Francis Beaumont and John Fletcher's play "The Knight of the Burning Pestle" (1611). The song is in the Percy Folio and is Child Ballad no. 74. It also has a strong Appalachian heritage: it's recorded in Cecil Sharp and Maud Karpeles, "English Folk Songs from the Southern Appalachians" (no. 20). Related English ballads which share stanza composition as well as narratives of heartbreak-induced death include Lord Thomas and Fair Annet / Eleanor and Lord Lovel.
