Usually incorrectly known as the "Can-Can", this piece is from the 1858 opéra bouffe Orphée aux enfers ("Orpheus in the Underworld"), first performed at the Théâtre des Bouffes Parisiens, Paris. It is sung by the characters Pluton (tenor), Jupiter (baritone), Vénus (contralto, played by Marie Garnier in the first performance) and Eurydice (soprano, Lise Tautin). The Can-Can is a dance derived from the quadrille or galop. It first appeared in Parisian music halls in the 1830's, possibly arriving from Algeria.
