- When P. P. Arnold signed to Immediate, label founder Andrew Loog Oldham asked record producer Mike Hurst if he had any suitable songs for her. Hurst was producing Cat Stevens at the time and recommended "The First Cut Is the Deepest", which Stevens had not yet recorded. Hurst produced both Arnold's and Stevens' recordings, and sang harmony in the chorus on the Stevens version.
