- Theologian, classicist, teacher, translator and poet. He is best known for the work he did during his time as the rector of Lærði skólinn í Reykjavík (Learned School of Reykjavík) particularly his translations of Homer's Odyssey and Iliad into Icelandic after his death finalized by his son. He also wrote a number of well-known Icelandic poems and hymns including the lyrics to the Icelandic version of "Stille Nacht, Heilige Nacht": Heims um ból.
