- Popular singer who specialized in novelty songs. Shay was known as "The Park Avenue Hillbillie". Her stage act included dressing like an elegant denizen of the city while talking like a rural Southerner. Inactive in the 1960s, Shay became a character actress in the 1970s, and had a recurring role in the American television series "The Waltons" as Thelma, the owner of The Dew Drop Inn until her death.
