Gunning was a folksinger and songwriter. Born in Kentucky as a coal miner's daughter, Gunning became a coal miner's wife. After World War II her second husband - her first husband died of tuberculosis in 1938 - moved to Detroit in search of industrial employment. In the 1960s, Gunning began to appear at folk festivals; however, after the death of her second husband in 1976, her health deteriorated and she rarely performed outside of church.
