- Hughes was a prolific and important poet, significant in the development of Welsh literature, and a collector of traditional folk songs to which he added lyrics. His writing style (for simplicity of diction) and subject matter (patriotism, country life and love) were in a similar vein to those of Robert Burns from Scotland and Thomas Moore from Ireland.
