Error description

Not an error, but the starting riff from this cover version seems to be the origin of the hook.

Rita Chao - Hanky Panky (1967)

I have no proof, but it seems T Rex had a week long concert in Japan in between November 28, 1972 and December 4, 1972

'20th Century Boy' was recorded on December 3, 1972 in Toshiba Recording Studios in Tokyo, Japan -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/20th_Century_Boy

Maaaybe Marc Bolan picked or heard some songs by Rita Chao (a Singaporean-Chinese singer born Ling Yun 凌雲).

Realistically, I'd be amazed they'd even find such a record (given the date), but who knows...

Rita Chao's back up band The Quests (with guitarist Reggie Verghese) was on EMI, as was T Rex, so maybe they heard it from an EMI representative.

I would find that far fetched that Marc Bolan would scour records world-wide for the next riff...

The had another week long tour in Japan in October 1973, but the single was released on March 2, 1973.

Thanks.

I hear the similarity, but with the information at hand I'd say it's just a coincidence. The structure is so extremely simple that there are bound to be artist developing something almost identical.

I'll fast-track it Smile
