Error description

I seriously start doubting the Recording date (July 1966) of Johnny Darrell's "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town"

The track was produced by Bob Montgomery

In 1966 Bob was still working at the Fame Recording Studios with Rick Hall. In September 1966 he produced (together with Rick Hall) Clyde McPhatter.

It was only at the end of 1966 that he started as a producer at the United Artists Records label.

Comparing several matrix numbers of the United Artists Records label, I come to the conclusion, that Johnny Darrell's "Ruby, Don't Take Your Love to Town", probably was recorded in December 1966.

Thank you very much for your in-depth research. Indeed, the website where we got the recording date says: ca. July 1966 poss. Columbia Recording Studio...

Changed the recording date to 1966 (no month, just to be sure).

I got some more proof, Johnny wasn't the first one to record the song.

In the liner-notes of a Bear Family sampler, the recording date of Darrell is given as January 27, 1967.

And Waylon Jennings already recorded a version in September 1966.

And both the composer, Mel Tillis and Johnny Western recorded versions in December 1966.
