Hi - the best way to feed this information in is through the "Report Error" button on the You Belong to Me page. Give it a try - but remember to include some references/sources to confirm.

We have the entry listed: You Belong to Me

And this is what Wikipedia says:

The first 1952 recording of the song was by Joni James. She had seen the sheet music in the Woods Building in Chicago and the lyrics attracted her. She recorded the song in February, 1952, in Chicago and it was released in March on the local Sharp Records label as her second single on August 5, 1952, after Jo Stafford, Patti Page and Dean Martin had covered it.

However, no sources given.

The answer lies within Michael Ruppli's "The MGM Discograhy".

The bolded part doesn't makes any sense.

I have updated the work and set Joni James as the original. Her first single for MGM was released in April 1952, so her singles on Sharp must have been released before that. No-one else released "You Belong to Me" until June or July.

OK, I think there are some words missing from what wiki says, it should be "it was released in March on the local Sharp Records label and reissued on MGM as her second single on that label on August 5, 1952, after Jo Stafford, Patti Page and Dean Martin had covered it".

Jon, there's still contradiction here: was Joni's MGM single in April or August?

Hi Walt, Joni's first MGM single in April was Let There Be Love/My Baby Just Cares for Me (a reissue of her first Sharp single). You Belong to Me was her second MGM single in August (reissue of her second Sharp single).

Well, I guess I'm assuming she must have released her Sharp singles before she signed to MGM. I don't know if that's a correct assumption.

Ah okay, I read that the wrong way. Thanks.
