Genre tags

How exactly are the genre tags generated? I've seen a couple artists with "more christian rock" as a genre, and Joy Electric is tagged as "christian punk", which isn't correct

These genre tags are/were imported from some source by Denis. We don't manage them.

I think the genre types that are assigned to artists are basically random. They do not enhance the site; in fact, given that they are as often as not ludicrous as applied to a particular artist, they detract from the item and make those of us who toil on behalf of SHS amateurish. I ask that we consider discontinuing the use of these imported genre types.

At the very least it would be nice to have a way to edit them.

I do believe they're imported from 'The Echo Nest'.

Only editors and certified contributors can see these tags, I think.

I could be missing it, but I see no genre tag. Using Joy Electric as an example:

Yes. It was a sort of "alpha version", implemented just to see how they worked. It didn't go very well and, since genres would be quite hard to manage, the idea was shelved.

We might as well remove them.
