Since this is the 2nd time this question has come up recently, bringing to the forum rather than an error report....

When is an artist's real name used as the primary name rather than an alias, especially when all or the majority of SHS entries use that alias? The artist that triggered this post: Michael Cunio

Typically it's up to the editor who created the artist to determine what to use as the "common name". Not sure why that wasn't done there but I've notified sebcat about it.

I typically follow the name the artist uses on their publicity - in this case facebook.

Once upon a time aliases would be entered only if they were linked to at least one performance, but since the rule doesn't exist anymore, I very much prefer having a common name John Smith alias Sir Pump-a-lot instead of a Sir Pump-a-lot period.

Of course, there are cases when aliases have become common names (Madonna, Prince, Mogol...), but more often than not, when I ask myself the question: "which name does this artist use for his/her songwriting credits?" the answer is "works written by Sir Pump-a-lot are credited to John Smith".

...and K.C. would be Harry Wayne Casey.

That one actually looks bad on site in my view. I'm rather confident that Casey uses his real name for writing credits. Here's one that needs some clean-up on site in my view.

Of course, I also believe that Ringo Starr uses his real name for credits, but that alias is legendary....
