Introduction by 8Ball
--------------------------------
So back in the 90's, the world of compilations was out of control. Not that they were bad, but they were EVERYWHERE thanks to the proliferation of CDs. The main purpose behind them were to promote bands for cheap. Some worked and most didn't, but they usually (at their worst) had a couple of gems. Most comps also had themes that ranged from being on the same label, same genre of music, love of some sort of mutual subject, and of course my favorite: band covers. There were more than a few band cover compilations in the 90s, including punk bands. However, it occurred to me that nobody had put one together for one of the founding hardcore punk bands that had paved the way for so many bands after them: Black Flag. I was slightly irritated that there wasn't one so I decided to do one. How hard could it be?

I gave myself (and the bands) a year to get their shit together before I would go to press. I initially wanted bands to record an original version for the comp...no previous recordings. The comp would be an initial run of 1000 CDs, and I would give each band 25 copies (which would be half the run) and then if they wanted more, I'd sell to them at cost. Vinyl wasn't considered an option unless demand justified it. I mean, I wasn't a label guy...I just wanted to put out the comp and help out some bands. DIY, right?

I hit up some of the bands I liked who I knew, played with, or thought would sound good for the comp. I used MRR's 'Book Your Own Fucking Life' as a resource to connect with bands that I didn't know but liked. After a few months, I started to realize the difficulty in putting together a comp: flaky bands, dogshit recordings, and excuses, excuses, excuses. After half of the bands that promised to do it flaked, I put in an open call for more bands and out of the ones I liked, I ended up with the lineup you see here.

Unfortunately, like all well intentioned ideas, the comp imploded...or rather I should say, I did. I ran out of money. I ended up moving shortly after the deadline and got caught up with trying to keep up with life. The comp fell by the wayside and was forgotten. Nobody seemed to mind either...or care.

Fast forward 22 YEARS(!) Covid hit and all of a sudden, everybody had spare time on their hands. Digging through some old artwork, I stumbled on some promo artwork I did for the comp. Hmmmm. Listening to the old songs made me feel bad that I hadn't put out the music. While some of the songs had already been recorded before I had the idea of the comp, the majority of them were recorded just for the project. Those people took the time out of their lives to be part of the comp and I had dropped the ball. A few of the people I knew were now dead, and a lot of the bands just aren't around anymore....but the music was still there. So, I decided the least I could do is put the project on YouTube and finally get it out there. A couple of the bands did put out their songs in other ways, which is great, but for the majority of the songs, this is the first time getting out there. I did no mastering other than a couple songs whose volume was so damn low, I had to turn it up. Other than that, what you hear is what the bands sent me.

So, sorry to the bands and everyone involved, but better 22 years later than never, eh? Hope you enjoy! -8ball
