In 1915 A.Z. Idelsohn collected a nigum, a wordless musical prayer from The Ukraine. He adapted the melody, wrote Hebrew lyrics to it and first performed it in 1918. The first published score of Hava Nagila is found in Idelsohn’s songster "Sefer Hashirim," published in 1922.
There are also claims that the lyrics were written by Moshe Nathanson when he was 12 years old. According to the Nathanson family, Moshe was a student of Idelsohn and wrote the lyrics as a class assignment. - Licensing
