- Also titled "Steal Away to Jesus". An Africo- American spiritual, often stated to be a coded song to help escaping slaves. It is now a gospel music standard. It has been reported by some sources that the song was composed by Wallace Willis, a slave of a Choctaw freedman in the old Indian Territory, sometime before 1862.
