- The two sweethearts are the singer's (Ned) mother with gray silvery hair and the youthful girl he loves with golden hair. The Carter Family made a recording of this in 1932 and A.P. Carter arranged the lyrics slightly and registered it as his own Work, but this was first recorded in 1899 as "Two Sweethearts of Mine" by Harry McDonough.
