- Carcassés was born in Kingston, Jamaica where his maternal grandfather was working as a diplomat at the time, moving to Cuba when he was four years of age. There, he sang as a boy and was initially interested in opera and Italian songs. In 1956, he began singing popular songs. Carcassés also learned to play drums, bass, piano and trumpet among other insruments. Carcassés sings and plays Latin music, including Latin jazz and salsa. He is also a songwriter.
