Early country entertainer born in Taylor County, Kentucky in 1903. He founded his band, "Uncle Henry's Original Kentucky Mountaineers," in the late 1920s. Initially it was a combination of a string band and a "modern" dance band that toured the Midwest and were heard regularly on the radio. By 1933 he created a new stage presence by dressing in a long frock coat, wire-rimmed spectacles and a goatee. Other members of his band also changed their appearance and stage names to present themselves as a comic hillbilly group. He had his own radio shows on various stations in Kentucky, Chicago and other locations throughout the 1930s, 1940s and into the 1950s. By the time "Uncle Henry" made his first recordings in the 1940s, many of the original members of his band had left the group.
